A few words of caution about the care of gems.
st, quartz is almost everywhere and because of that, much if not most, of common dust is in fact tiny quartz particles. Remember, that gems with higher Mohs hardness values will scratch gems with lower values. So if dust contains quartz, which has a hardness of 7, rubbing a gemstone with a lower hardness value will result in it being scratched.
nd, very few gems can survive ultrasonic cleaning without being damaged. In fact, some will lose their luster or be destroyed by it.
rd, most gems are attacked by acids. Vinegar is of course an acid.
th, sharply hitting even a hard gem along a cleavage plane can cause it to cleave into 2 pieces.
th, some gems, like opals, require higher humidity to maintain their high percentage of water. They should never be allowed to "dry out".
th, gems with a Mohs value of 4 or lower should not be used in jewelry.
