Jewels have been enhanced since Biblical times and before.

Almost all jewels from Diamonds to Opals can be enhanced for color, clarity, carats, and obviously cut.

Jade has been "waxed" for centuries to cover surface imperfections.

Around 2,500 BC tools near Burmese mining area show they were being worked for rubies. Somebody long ago discovered if they "cooked" rubies in charcoal fires with crude blowpipes the resulting stones were clearer. Heat reduces and improves inclusions. Nearly all rubies today are heated to enhance their clarity.

Emeralds can have a lot of surface scratches and crevices. Long ago it was discovered that if an Emerald was "oiled" these imperfections disappeared. Eventually it was found that if the oil was colorless and had an index of refraction close to that of an Emerald, it had the best effect.

The Emerald on the left above is untreated. The photograph on the right shows the same jewel after "oiling". Most Emeralds today are "oiled", often with Cedar oil, but sometimes with Balsam resin, and even epoxy resin.

Both of the above treatments have been used for hundreds if not thousands of years, and heating has been tried on many gems.

For instance, if you heat Amethyst under the right conditions it turns into Citrine, although both still remain Quartz.

Another heat treatment miracle is Tanzanite. It is brown when mined out of the earth but after heating turns an incredibly beautiful velvet blue color.
